Technology is ever changing and our students need to be able to experience and become familiar with it. Kindle Fires will provide each of our students with that opportunity!
The majority of our students come from low income families and receive free or reduced price lunches.
Because our families are struggling to meet their basic needs, most of our students do not have any type of technology at home. Their faces light up any time they are presented with an opportunity to use any kind of technology at school and they are always so excited to go to "Computer Lab." Unfortunately due to our school being very crowded, we only get to go to the "Computer Lab" once a week for 40 minutes (and most of the time in Computer Lab is spent on testing). This is the only time that each student gets to individually have computer time.
In a world where technology is constantly changing and considered a basic necessity for almost any kind of job, we want to ensure our students have opportunities to experience different kinds of technology as well as meet their needs as readers with a wide range of reading levels and abilities.
My Project
This year our school is implementing BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices). This is great but many of our students do not own their own tablets, e-readers and/or Kindles and will not be able to participate in these activities. Having three more Kindle Fires in our classroom will ensure that all students will have experience with all of the new technology and feel included with these BYOD activities.
With hundreds of books being just a click away, our students will have no problem finding their "good fit book." The Kindle Fire will help them with their comprehension skills and promote fluency. Students who struggle with reading will benefit greatly from the text-to-speech feature. This is especially important for our ELL students. Students can work in small groups or independently to practice sight words, phonics, spelling, and all kinds of math skills. Our lower level students will gain confidence in their success as readers. And our higher level students will constantly be challenged.
The Kindle Fire will allow us to meet all of our students' needs in a fun and interactive way.
We want to provide the opportunity for all of our students to experience technology while improving their reading skills and enriching their learning experience!
