“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr. Seuss
Placing books in students' hands and providing them with a variety of texts at their just right level allow students to explore the world around them or get lost in their imagination
We are a class of 19 fourth graders who love to learn.
In our small school we focus on three things, kindness and respect, being ready to learn and being safe. We have a wonderful community that supports us and believes in us. My fourth graders are curious about the world around them. They really enjoy learning about current events, United States history and animals. We are currently changing our reading curriculum to align with a workshop model.
My Project
The range of fiction and non fiction books I have requested will help to broaden the variety of books and level of books in our classroom library. Adding more informational texts will help my students explore the world around them, make connections to our Science and Social Studies curriculum and provide age/level appropriate books for our informational writing unit. The materials will also help increase the amount of good literature in our classroom library. By adding award winning books, students will be guaranteed to find books that will increase their imagination and engagement. Finally, the materials will allow me to provide a variety of texts that will help students find their "just right" book. Since we are moving to a workshop model next year, it will be important for students to have an assortment of "just right" books to choose from. With these materials I feel comfortable that all students in my classroom, no matter what their reading level, will find (and enjoy) many different books!
Updating the variety of text in our classroom library will allow for students to have a greater choice in choosing a book that will interest them.
By adding more books to each reading level, I will be able to guarantee that students will have exposure to different kinds of texts and topics which will increase their vocabulary, comprehension and knowledge. My hope is that our classroom library will inspire a lifelong love of reading for my 4th graders!
