Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

High school math has changed so much since I was a student. The handheld calculator wasn't even invented until I had graduated. But now teachers have learned to link the symbolic to the visual. How better to do this than by building our own 3D mathematical models?
I teach mathematics in a high needs high school.
Over 90% of students should qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world. I am tasked with giving these students a firm mathematical foundation to carry them into college. The city says my school is failing, but my AP calculus students say that's incorrect. Every one of them will matriculate in a 4 year college on graduation.
My Project
One of the abstract concepts that students struggle with in Calculus is the physical idea of an integral. That is, how can they view physical objects as composed of infinitesimally thin slices stacked together. This is precisely the way a 3D printer works. I think using the MakerBot 3D printer to create projects will help them transition from these concrete ideas to the more abstract notions of integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
The goal that drives all my lesson planning is student success.
I believe that designing and printing 3D objects will help students to internalize and fully understand abstract mathematical concepts and relationships. Your contribution will help even the playing field for my students, so they can achieve to their potential in mathematics in high school, and beyond in college.
