My amazing little artists are so very special and keep a smile on my face daily. Most of my students come from low-income households, various ethnic backgrounds and experience diversity which can limit the materials and resources I have available in my classroom. I want my Special Needs students to feel excited about coming to art and are engaged in a classroom with 15-30 students at a time, all wanting to explore and learn.
The possibilities are endless with the special materials, additional resources and adaptive seating, which will enable my artists to find a way to create and explore so that each individual student feels safe and comfortable.
My students have a variety of challenges and require a different approach to learning that sometimes limits them from creating with the common art supplies and limited classroom furniture. Versatile seating and materials to create will help me design an environment to engage all my students.
My Project
Seating and positioning plays a huge role in how engaged a child is in the classroom, especially children with sensory issues or special needs. The students will be able to choose seating that is adaptive to their needs while creating art and feeling safe doing it. Some of my students like to create art while sitting on the floor and others need a more mobile seat where they can focus on creating art.
The adaptive materials will make a difference by giving them choices on how they want to create their art with an individual hands-on approach.
Using specific art supplies like spring scissors and special paint in a container that the students can hold allow them to be able to create art in their own way. Hands-on building materials to create sculptures allow the students to be engaged while designing and learning the whole time.
