What do kids love? Choice! My students literally eat up the Choose Your Own Adventure books, just like I did when I was a kid. Sometimes it's a challenge to build student interest in non-fiction books, but the Who Was series has really captured the attention of my readers!
My class is made up of 3rd and 4th grade students who love reading every day.
My kids devour books when they are engaging and informative. Our school is a place where kids are used to having and making choices. Among other things, students choose their own books to read. Having a wide selection of highly engaging books is a must for these kids!
My Project
When I was a child one of my favorite series of books were the Choose Your Own Adventure books. These books allow the reader to make choices throughout the story which can lead to different scenarios and endings! I have found that kids today love these books as much as I do. Students love to go back and make different choices and reread the story to see how their choices affect the outcome. Few book series are as engaging for my struggling readers as these.
The Who Was series of biographies are excellent for getting kids interested in non-fiction. The people chosen for the biographies have led important, interesting, and inspiring lives that students love to read about. It is rare for students this age to become engrossed in a biography the way they can with books in this series!
This project is important because I ask my students to read across the genres as the year progresses.
I often see students get to the science fiction and biography genres and stall out. These two book series are highly engaging, and will have students begging to read them. Having a lot of choice in a classroom library is essential because students learn best when they are able to read books that fit their interests. Thanks so much for your support!
