Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Do you remember what it felt like to be sent to work independently and not remembering the directions that your teacher gave you? Or, do you remember seeing your teacher shuffle around looking for materials?
I am a Pre-K dual language teacher teaching 19 kids.
My classroom is divided in half. Half of my classroom is setup in English and the other half is setup in Spanish. I teach one week in English and one week in Spanish. My students spend an equal amount of time immersing themselves in both languages. Throughout the day they are partnered with a native Spanish speaker working to become proficient in both languages. Through this program they are able to learn about different cultures from their peers, and they are able to appreciate first hand the diversity within our community.
We are a very diverse community in New Jersey serving low-income families. My students come to school each day looking forward to engaging themselves in activities and working with materials that are not always available to them at home.
My Project
Your donations to this project are important because they will ensure that my students will be working independently and that we have the appropriate materials in both English and Spanish. In a classroom so large with 19 four year olds, I often find myself repeating myself and struggling to get around to all 19 kids while they are in groups. The talk blocks, Easi Speak Recorder and the Assessment Recorder will ensure that I do not miss a thing. I will be able to record a set of directions for a group ahead of time so that is at any point they are unsure of what I said, they can always go back and and press the blocks and hear me without having to call me back. The Easi Speak Recorder will also help our students develop their oral skills. The Assessment Recorder will be a great asset to my classroom because I can leave it with a group and go back and listen to it later so that it will be just as if I were sitting with them. I did not miss a thing.
Being that I am teaching Spanish this year in addition to English, I feel that my classroom is lacking certain materials such as cds, games and big books in Spanish.
These materials will ensure that my students are engaging themselves equally in both languages with the appropriate materials. Spanish materials are very difficult to come by, and we often do not find them in the catalogs that we are given. I want to make sure that I am prepared to offer my students the best Dual Language experience.
