This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What is your most memorable art project from elementary school? When did history come alive through observation of an artwork? I vividly remember looking at "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Seurat and then using Q-tips to create a Pointillism landscape.
My students love exploring new art topics weekly.
Each of them have a unique voice and convey ideas through the production of artwork. They are bright, funny, and creative. There are over 750 students in grades K-5 who deserve an awesome arts education! We are a high-poverty school, and I have very few teaching materials to spark creativity and discussion in my groups.
My Project
We need several sets of art prints to use as visual aids. I want to give my students the opportunity to see beyond their world and explore moments in history and other cultures through the lens of fine art. My hope is to get this project funded and begin my studio lessons with an art history discussion, using these new prints. These conversations encourage critical thinking skills. I hope to empower students through art and inspire them to tell their stories.
Art increases empathy, cultural intelligence, and a collective sense of humanity.
Students viewing works of art can draw comparisons between history and current issues.
Viewing art history is a memorable experience for a young student. I remember discussing work by Monet, Picasso, Degas, Cassatt, Da Vinci, and Matisse in my elementary classroom. This was so magical to me as a student and artist. I want to give my students the same memorable experiences in their art program.
