It's easy to find quality fiction books for students. It's much harder to find quality non-fiction books. My students need a set of non-fiction readers that are on their level, so that they may independently read for pleasure and information.
My students come from a wide variety of locations and families in our area.
I have students who come to me reading and writing and others who come to be who barely know their name. Somehow, I've got to help close the gap and get all of them ready and prepared for first grade. With the move towards the Common Core Standards, non-fiction literacy is a huge part of that preparation. A new set of non-fiction readers (with a variety of levels) will help better prepare my students as they work with me in Kindergarten and beyond.
My Project
I would love to create a "non-fiction" section in my classroom library, and enable students to find books on their independent reading level. I want to foster a love of learning and help my students learn how to find information in books. Non-fiction readers will allow my students to read for information and to share that information with others.
I have a huge fiction libary in my classroom, but I only have a few non-fiction books that my students can read independently.
They love being able to pick out a book and read it to themselves and tell me about it. I want them to be able to do this with non-fiction, as well as fiction.
