Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember going to school and wondering if you would have paper to write on that day or a pencil to use. Unfortunately, this is a reality for my students.
I am a fifth grade teacher in a low income school.
I work in New York City. The students in my classroom are very hard working. For a majority of my students, English is their second language. I also have a large special needs population in my classroom. I think it is a travesty that funding for public education has gotten so bad that students don't have the basic needs like paper and pencils. Even when my students have a pencil, we hope it doesn't break because we don't have pencil sharpeners either.
My Project
All I am asking for is your help to give my students the basic needs of learning. Besides a school building, which we have, I think pencils and paper is next on the list for having a school run effectively. I never imagined when I was going to school to become a teacher that pencils and paper would become a concern in my classroom. The materials I need are paper, pencils, and a pencil sharpener. We do not have chalkboards in our rooms either, so I am also asking for chart tablets so I can chart the important aspects of my lessons and hang them up for my students to refer too.
I would appreciate your help in giving my students the basic necessities of education.
You would think that in the year 2012 that this grant would be for computers or iPads, not paper and pencils. Please help me in letting my students know that education is important enough for them to get paper and pencils to learn.
