"Dance like nobody is watching."
Dancers naturally want to be on stage and put together a performance for the public. They love learning choreographed routines and performing them not only for an auditorium full of people, but also for their fellow classmates during the school day.
Students taking dance are excited to be in the class - it's the elective they have chosen.
Because it is an elective, my dancers range from 9th grade to 12th grade. Furthermore, their dance ability can range from beginning to advanced. Within all levels of dance, my students are dedicated and vibrant. Those that have danced awhile are always offering help to those that are just starting out. It is a beautiful thing to watch students from all backgrounds come together to produce a dance performance at the end of the year. We have fun and we work hard.
Our community is a family to the highest degree. Students, faculty, and staff alike are always encouraging of one another. Walking onto our campus you will see smiles, hear positive interaction, and feel as though you belong.
My Project
We need portable speakers in the classroom for choreography projects. Throughout the year, students are asked to participate in choreographed dance routines for a grade, as well as the dance show. They love the freedom of these projects. Typically they are guided assignments that have specific requirements that must be met. Other times they are told "choreograph a minute routine" and they are free to let their creativity flow.
By allowing students to come together and create a piece of work they are proud of, students are able to grow exponentially.
You get to see their creativity flourish and see how amazing they truly are. It gives them the confidence to have a voice. It also teaches them teamwork and leadership. These are life lessons that will stay with them forever.
