Do you remember listening to books on tape when you were in elementary school? I would love for my sweet first grade students to have that same opportunity. Listening to reading is a great way to improve reading skills and become better, independent readers.
This year I have 18 energetic first graders who LOVE to read!
I owe this in part to a new literacy adventure we have embarked on during our literacy block called "The Daily 5." My sweet students can't wait for this time each day. It warms my heart to see them get so excited about reading and picking out "good fit" books.
The "Daily 5" has helped me better meet the individual needs of my students by allowing me to differentiate my instruction and work with small groups of students while the others are at one of the Daily 5 rotations. Our school is very rural and serves a low income area with over 60% of our students who receive free or reduced meals. The technology, supplies, and materials we have are very limited. Although our supplies are limited, my students are still very eager and excited about learning each day.
My Project
The Daily 5 is a current best practice in reading and writing. The Daily 5 includes the components of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. So far, we have been able to do all of these except for listen to reading because we do not have the materials needed to complete this component. I am asking that you help my students be able to complete listen to reading by helping to fund a listening center for our classroom. Not only will this new listening center help my students successfully work through the Daily 5 program, but it will also help to foster a love for reading in all of my students and help them become stronger, more independent readers. A listening center would be an asset to our first grade classroom and would be used every day.
This project is so important because literacy is the foundation to our learning.
I have seen such a love for reading by my students this year that I haven't seen in my past years of teaching. I owe this love of reading to the Daily 5! I want to keep them excited and engaged and I know this listening center will help do that. Please help me complete our Daily 5 experience by helping me fund this project and make listen to reading a reality for these precious kids. Thank you!
