My students are not exposed to libraries when away from school. I would like to give them the opportunity to learn how to independently choose books. My classroom is small and without walls (open concept) and we need a cart which can be easily moved around the room.
My students come from diverse backgrounds.
Our school is a large city, urban school with 63% free and reduced lunch and 60% English Language Learners. Many of my students are new to school and do not have access to the public library or books when away from school.
My Project
I am asking for a movable cart and storage boxes so that I can keep leveled sets of books organized. This will help my students be able to access these books on their own. The privacy folders will take the place of old manila file folders, which I am currently using for test taking and which need to be replaced.
These resources are important to my students.
My students need to gain experience choosing their own books independently. In addition, research shows that when students choose their own books, they are able to read for longer periods of time.
