The AVID program is designed to give good students support to thrive in rigorous classes and to prepare them for the rigors of college. These students have benefited from teachers, administrators, and experts in various fields who have shared their expertise. Now, it's time for them to give back.
My school is a small junior-senior high school with a diverse population in an urban area.
Although small, the school's sense of community is large, thanks to strong interpersonal relationships among all the stakeholders. My students reflect the diversity of the community. This year in 12th grade they have worked hard on applying to colleges, getting letters of recommendation, completing scholarship applications, and maintaining good grades, even in their most rigorous courses. Along the way they have gained help from a variety of people - teachers, administrators, coaches, and community members. With all the focus on them, I want them redirected to look at the broader community. They are good students, many of whom have experienced painful hardships, with empathetic outlooks.
My Project
The students will be making no-sew fleece blankets as a community service project. Since many of the students come from low socio-economic circumstances, I'm requesting fleece material so that the students can make the cozy comforters for the needy. If we get enough material, I hope that the seniors could show the AVID juniors or sophomores or freshmen how to make the blankets. This would help spread the word of helping others. I would hope that the students learn cooperation and empathy for others.
I hope that this project is the first of many forays into helping others.
While the classroom won't be improved in a materialistic manner, the intrinsic benefits will be long lasting. I want the students to learn the satisfaction of making something useful for someone.
