My Students

A typical day in our classroom involves my students engaging in meaningful learning activities. Many of our activities involve group work and moving around the room. My students love doing their work, group and independent, out of their seats. Around 50% of our day is spent away from the desks.

We are a 3rd grade classroom in a small Title 1 school.

We have 18 students in our classroom who come from all different backgrounds. We are a fidgety group who loves being up and moving while we are learning. We tend to recall what we have learned when we are up and moving. Our school is located in a rural community where many of our families are underprivileged. The majority of the students are on free and reduced price lunch.

My Project

In our classroom, we only have 2 "comfy" seats, as my students call them, to sit in during the times we are working on the floor. Often times, we have arguments over who gets to sit in the comfy seats and waste valuable time fixing that problem. With the soft seats, each of my students will have a "comfy" spot to sit on when we work on the floor. My students do many activities out of their seats. In the morning, they move around the room and sit on the floor during our silent reading time. During our 90 minute reading block, my students do group work and are sitting around the room as well. Also, based on behavior, when we are on or iPads in the afternoons, I let them sit around the room.

The donations to this project will improve my classroom in many ways.

I believe that students learn best when they are in a comfortable and caring setting. With the donations, the soft seats will provide my students with the comfortable setting they need when they are in small groups or independently working on the floor. We will no longer have arguments and waste time fighting over the only two "comfy" seats we have now.
