Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our first class motto is: "Don't be an "if" thinker, be a "how" or "why" thinker"; and our second one is: "Don't be the reason for a problem, be the solution." The students are challenged to solve problems in more than one way and to work together with their classmates to do so.

Our school is like a big family.

The principal and vice-principals are like the grandparents, the teachers are like parents, and the students are our children. Our mascot is the eagle, and our school motto is "Eagles SoaRRR: We are Responsible, Respectful and Ready." We are a very diverse elementary school. The majority of our students are general education students, but we also have many unique students in our school who are children with special needs and children with autism. Everyone in the building treats each other with respect and kindness. My students are very eager to learn, and despite the fact that the majority of them live in low income households and receive free breakfast and lunch, they have wonderful attitudes and very high hopes and dreams for the future.

My Project

My students will be using the carpet squares any time they need, or want, to sit on the classroom floor. They may choose to sit in the reading center and read silently, away from the class. When I read a book to the class, show videos, or we do interactive activities on the Eno board, the students would be able to come close and sit on the floor in a small group without having to move their chairs. The carpet squares are numbered, so I could also use them to enhance math lessons with activities that might include ways to reinforce odd and even numbers, place value concepts, and many other interactive activities.

Donations to this project will help improve my classroom by giving my students an alternative to sitting in their chairs.

I do not have room in my class to have a large, permanent carpet. The carpet squares would create a more comfortable, relaxed setting, for the room when necessary, by giving the students a clean place to sit on the floor. I also have many students who would benefit from having somewhere to go sit alone, or that is less restrictive than a chair when working independently.
