Help students make tangible connections between the abstract world of government and real life.
I teach 7th graders Civics and Economics in a suburban/rural area of Central Virginia.
Our school is socio-economicly diverse. We have a growing English as Second Language and I personally teach a majority of full inclusion Special Ed. As with most middle schoolers they are rambunctious and eager to please.
My Project
I have utilized lapbooks in my classroom before. Lapbooks are a very low tech approach to helping students put an entire chapter together. Students learn about a new objective and make a foldable about that day's lesson. Over the course of a chapter students will have many foldables. At the end of the chapter the students will glue the foldables into the folders that have been opened up and refolded to have the outside edges meet in the middle. The foldable is a great study tool.
As I said before, we have made foldables before and my students really enjoyed making them.
They took pride in their work and the finished product showed it! I would love to be able to have my kiddos make more foldables this school year.
