This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are eager to tackle global policy, climate, and social issues within our classroom, all they need is the access. Students need to know more than just the history of these issues, they need to be able to engage in the collaborative process of coming up with solutions for them.
My students are the best of the best!
They made the decision to attend a military academy with a college preparatory focus. They want to have access to all of the resources that will make them successful at all stages of their education. The freshman students come to my room with varying levels of experience and proficiency using technological tools and resources. Many of my students' only access to computers is during the school day. They are eager for an opportunity to interact with technology and to learn to use it in a productive manner. My school is very small and can only afford to service part of these needs. We are in need of technological resources that can be used every day. In a classroom of 30 students, we should be able to provide working laptops for each student to use during the school day.
Our students will use these Chromebooks every week to engage with various electronic primary and secondary sources. Many of the things we do involve our use of Google Documents in order to write, give feedback, and share information. Students will be able to accomplish tasks in their history class while simultaneously learning the tech skills they will need to be successful in today's society. We will be able to collect, analyze, and synthesize data. Students will be able to use the Chromebooks to complete research papers, create presentations to teach their fellow classmates, and use interactive content to enhance their educational experience. My students will have access to global issues that we can discuss in depth, look at how the international community is seeking to solve them, and figure out what their place is in that process. These materials could help foster new ideas and solutions to worldwide problems.
One of the most important skills students will need walking into college will be the ability to integrate technology into every facet of their lives.
This project will provide the opportunity for a group of students to obtain the skills they need to be successful. Students coming through this class will learn to be responsible creators and keepers of media and will use it to contribute in a positive way; an opportunity that would otherwise be impossible.
