Can you imagine going to school and not being able to understand anything your teacher says? Many of my students live in homes where their parents speak a language other than English. They are read stories in their native language. They need to hear stories read by fluent English speakers.
Many of my students are learning to speak their second language...English.
They are motivated to learn and their parents WANT to help them be successful in school. These students need to hear English from fluent speakers as they learn their letters, sounds, sight words and voice to print connection.
My Project
This project will enable my students and their parents to hear stories read to them by fluent English speakers. My English speaking students and former students will make recordings of themselves reading our classroom library. The English language learners will take these recordings, books, CD players and headphones home to practice their English and reading skills.
This project is going to help these first generation Americans become successful academically.
These students are motivated to learn. They just don't have the resources available to them to make this possible. Their parents CAN'T help them with their English and CAN'T help them with pronunciation. This project makes it possible to help the child and the parent with English and reading skills.
