About My Students
My students are engaged, excited and ready to learn. Highly creative, they are eager to learn how to their tell stories through visual mediums. The class is made up of students from low-income areas around New York City such as Harlem, Washington Heights and Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Many of them have little to no access to technology at home. What little exposure they have with technology is often to play games and/or simple communication. But they all share a love of film and photography and are eager to have their voices heard and join the global conversation unfolding on the Internet via social media. For a majority of our students, this class is the first time they are being taught any media literacy. Given the opportunity and proper resources, these students will push to express themselves in an outstanding and creative manner.
Students will learn film theory with a focus on cinematography and post production video editing. Students have been learning about topics such understanding and recognizing bias, camera angles and other film elements. As they advance and become more proficient, they will begin to work on projects of their own choosing/ranging from documentaries to music videos. My goal is for my students to become media literate; able to not only recognize different film techniques such as camera angles and shot composition, but also to create their own works using said techniques. As they work on their projects, students will learn what it takes to work as a team, solve problems as they arise, and learn how to maintain project deadlines. In doing so, students will gain real-life experience they can use on their resumes along with a portfolio of their work.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea overall is to have a film program in our school that can teach students about how to use film techniques to initiate their dreams and to express themselves. The point of the film club is to advance our knowledge on film and photography.
We want to create an Instagram or YouTube account where we can post our pictures and videos. We think this is the best way to connect with other people and so it's the best way for us to have a voice.
We want to be able to learn how to tell our stories in a way that people can connect with them. We hope this will bring us closer to our friends and family. In order for us to do that we need to have the necessary resources that can make that happen. For us, those resources are cameras. Once we obtain the equipment necessary to initiate hands on learning we can then use it to lend a voice to not only ourselves but also to the rest of our community.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
