Environmental literacy will prepare students to solve some of our most challenging problems. In my biology class, they begin to develop awareness and skills needed to tackle global issues.
I teach honors and Advanced Placement Biology to highly motivated students at an academically challenging junior/senior high school.
Many of my students will chose to pursue careers in the STEM field as they continue to college and beyond. My students enjoy hands on science and frequently design and carry out experiments as part of our curriculum.
My Project
This summer I will travel with a team of teachers to Costa Rica for two weeks to study tropical ecosystem monitoring techniques. As part of the program, we will bring what we have learned back to the students in our local community. Our plan is to use camera traps to monitor burrowing animals. Camera traps are motion activated digital cameras. They collect images of animals in the field with minimal disruption. Our students will make predictions about how the occupancy of gopher tortoise burrows will change due to rising ocean levels. Then they will use camera traps to collect data which will be analyzed to look for trends and patterns in animal movement. During this project, students will actively participate in all phases of the scientific method. They well be learning how science works and what it can do. This will empower my students to become part of the solution to the problems we all face.
Camera traps will be shared by students at 4 area high schools.
Students from all schools will work collaboratively to collect, analyze and share data. Camera traps from this project will be placed at a central location and the data will be digitally uploaded and available to all students. At the completion of this project, students have been invited to share their experiences with scientists in our local community.
