If you were to ask a student which class is their most challenging class, many would admit that they struggle with math. At the secondary level, I hope to help students overcome their deficiencies in math by helping them understand math. Adding calculators as a resource in the classroom is a must.
In the inner city, our population of students vary greatly on all levels.
One thing I have noticed about most of my students is that they struggle with understanding mathematical concepts. They have often given up on trying to fully grasp the concept and merely want to do just enough to get by. I hope to excite them and encourage them in learning about the subject and developing confidence in solving math problems that they may encounter in class and in their daily lives. Incorporating the use of calculators will help students move pass the frustration of computing missed math skills and focus more on the conceptual understanding of skills taught in Algebra, Geometry and Probability & Statistics.
Calculators will help students access mathematical concepts and enhance their experiences which were previously limited with only paper and pencil. I envision exciting students by allowing them to explore mathematical concepts, experiment with the data, and enhance their learning of mathematical concepts. Utilizing the use of calculators will help my students reach higher levels of mathematical power and understanding.
In this digital age, it is more important than ever to help students learn how to use technology to help solve everyday problems.
Since we also have a curriculum that is aligned to our state's standards, the calculator will be much more efficient to use as tool, reducing the amount of time one spends on a problem. Calculators are tools to help solve problems. Our students need to develop a sense of numeracy that allows them to estimate and predict answers to a multitude of problems.
