My Students

Within my classroom I have students who are struggling to communicate their needs, wants and desires.

Our school is located in an area where the economy has hit hard and where generational poverty that has existed for sometime.

My first grade class is a full inclusion classroom. I have children with a wide spectrum of needs in the room along side regular education students. My students need these manipulatives that will foster communication and team work so that my students can communicate with each other and build friendships.

My Project

What all my students need is to learn to communicate with each other in an interactive way. What a better way than to build or make sentences together! They will learn sharing, problem solving, taking turns and manners that my students are lacking. These skills are so important in their school life process. Plus, it will create a gateway for students with special needs like autism to join a group or talk with a student they may not have talked with before. It can teach them how to start a conversation or ask for a sentence piece without just grabbing which will help them make friends and feel good about themselves.

Communicating is the basis of functioning in society.

If you can't communicate your needs and wants, you are trapped in frustration and anger because no one knows what you need. These manipulatives will give my students two big things-a way to communicate their needs and wants, and a vehicle to make friendships they have been struggling to make.
