Building a Library to Build Community

My students need a variety of books that will encourage a love of reading, provide the ability to grow in a safe environment, and expose them to other walks of life.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Books are a uniquely portable magic." -- Stephen King. As a first year teacher, I want to be able to provide my students with the ability to better themselves & their community by exploring new worlds & ideas in a safe environment. I can do this by providing a large classroom library.

My school is very diverse with 89% minority enrollment.

Our school is a Title I school with 79% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. What these numbers do not tell you is how hungry students are for knowledge, community, and connection. As a teacher, it's my responsibility to make sure that my students feel represented in my lessons & in the literature offered in our classroom. I will have students from all different walks of life, with stories to tell themselves -- the best way to teach effective story telling is to encourage a love of reading, and this can only be done through offering a wide selection of literature, from graphic novels to historic texts. Exposing students to a wide variety of cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, sexualities, religions, and thought processes allows them to humanize character traits that might differ from their own. This humanization fosters acceptance, which is an essential part of building community & personal connections.

My Project

My students need a variety of books such as Sold, speak, and Paper Towns that will encourage a love of reading, provide the ability to grow in a safe environment, and expose them to new cultures and ways of life. These books will be used daily during Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) and as a treat for when students finish their work early and need a quiet activity. I believe that in order to truly instill a love of learning, books need to be treated as an enjoyable experience; students will never be quizzed on the material or responsible for book reports, instead, they will be encouraged to share what they've learned with friends and family, and provide reliable insight and recommendations to classmates. This expectation further reinforces the necessity of community and connection in the classroom.

Ultimately this project will make a difference not only in the walls of my classroom & in my school as a whole, but in the lives of my students outside of school in their daily interactions.

Supporting a love of learning is not only my responsibility as a teacher, but my calling as a human; with the addition of an expansive classroom library, I'll be able to provide thousands of daily adventures for students and help them find a dose of creative fuel, a friend, an idea, and a calling.
