Help us stock our classroom library! In a classroom full of Kindergarteners who love to read, our shelves are sadly bare. We need beautiful, engaging literature in Spanish to fill our book bins and create an environment where students are can always get their hands on the right book for them.
My Kindergarten Spanish immersion students are already becoming avid readers.
They spend thirty minutes a day during reading workshop poring over emergent story books and "just right" books at their levels. They love listening to read alouds and reading along with shared reading books. Some of them are native Spanish speakers; others are just beginning to speak and understand Spanish. They come from an array of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, as is typical at our school, a bilingual urban public school in California where the majority of students qualify for free and reduced price lunch.
My Project
While my students are eager to read, we inherited a classroom sadly lacking in reading material. We have been relying on generous loans from other teachers and from the public library to stock our shelves. This project would provide us with the books my student need which is high quality literature in Spanish to support our Spanish immersion program. These 44 books would allow my students to improve their comprehension strategies during interactive read alouds, fill their book bins with old and new favorites during reading workshop, discover new authors to admire and emulate, and find new mentor texts to inspire their own writing during writing workshop.
It is my belief that every child has the right to a classroom full of beautiful books, not photocopied decodables, not worn-out basal readers, but real, exciting, engaging literature.
Help my students learn to define themselves as readers in an environment where they will always have stories to share, authors to love, characters to laugh with and dream about, and plenty of books to fill their book bins.
