Our students spend 450 minutes each week in English class. That means they are just steps away from a classroom library. Students don't need a library card or pay overdue fees. The classroom library is open every day!
I work with two language arts teachers in a rural middle school.
One teacher is a 6th grader and the other is a 7th grade teacher. The teachers serve approximately 90 students each. The students are at varying levels of reading rates and interests. Some students leave in town and go visit the local library. However, many students live in very rural areas that are miles away from town.
My Project
Students need daily access to books! Fiction and Nonfiction! Teachers need to be able to provide books within footsteps of their students! Classroom libraries are the daily constant of books and access! Our students need to be able to read up-to-date books without having to leave the room, go to their locker, or pay an overdue library fee.
Fulfilling this project will add to the reading environment that the teachers are working to build each day.
Often they are forced to use their own money to build classroom libraries. Students will only need to take a few steps to get a book that will provide an escape or an experience that is out of their grasp!
