Nowadays, people walk around with thousands of songs in their pockets that can be accessed at the touch of a button. Our students should have the same ability in our music classroom!
In our urban, Title I school, I see about 400 students every week for music classes.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and speak many languages, including Spanish, Albanian, and Arabic. Many of them come from single parent homes, or have parents who work multiple jobs to make ends meet. These students love coming to music class each week! After I began including centers into our classes once a month, those weeks have become a fast favorite among students from all grades. They love taking charge of their learning, and controlling the pace and topic they are concentrating on during class.
My Project
When we work in centers, the students get a chance to practice a variety of musical skills in small groups or individually. In the past, I have included a listening station hooked up to a CD player or a single iPad. This means that I can't use the iPad elsewhere, and the students are stuck listening to the songs at the same rate as the rest of their group.
These iPod shuffles would be preloaded with songs, and then used in our listening center. The students will practice music for our concerts, listen to and analyze music, and evaluate classmates' compositions. They will also be used to record books on tape for use at our reading center, especially for sing-along books. All of this would be controlled by individual students, allowing them to work at their own pace, focusing on their own learning.
Students deserve to learn in a classroom that reflects our world.
These iPods will allow them to take charge of their own learning, experiencing and practicing music at their own interest level and pace.
