"Integrated Algebra is Life!" At least that's what my students would say on a typical day. When it comes to Algebra, my students repeatedly set their fears aside and work toward achieving success.
Our school, which is located in Harlem, has a reputation of establishing high standards for our students.
When asked what college they would like to attend, students respond with a multitude of answers ranging from Ivy Leagues to Historically Black Universities. This is because our students know that if they work hard, they will be able to attend the college of their choice. That said, the students in our room are passionate about learning, strive to become better mathematicians, and never give up when things become difficult. However, it is imperative that the students have the resources they need to continue to compete with the best high schools in New York City. With your help, our students will not only become better practitioners of the mathematics, but will also improve in the social skills necessary for college and careers.
With the new curriculum we are piloting next year, "Meaningful Mathematics", students are expected to take real world situations and model them mathematically. Students must do this in groups and be able to present it for the entire class. Setting them up with the proper materials will allow them to not only create great presentations, but to also take part in learning walks. With these learning walks, students will be able to give constructive criticism on each presentation (with the help of post it notes.) The index cards will be used as a means of administering formative assessments. These assessments will allow me to identify those students that are mastering the standards, as well as those that may need extra help. Lastly, with the adhesive chart paper, presentations can be posted all along the wall so that they can be referred to in the future. Furthermore, the rulers are sturdy enough to be used in upcoming school years.
If you donate toward this project, you will be supporting inner city students at a public school.
These students face several hardships on a day-to-day basis, and having the bare necessities like pencils, pens and markers to succeed is the least that can be asked for. Also, supporting our students will assure a smooth and productive transition to the common core curriculum. I am looking forward to helping our students not only keep up with those around the state, but also with those around the nation and the world.
