My Students

Because my students are physically & intellectually challenged and nonverbal, our day is filled with activities to promote independence such as communication, self advocation and physical mobility. We use our garden for communication, social, emotional, physical, vocational and sensory integration skills.

I have a classroom of 7 students grades 3-5.

My students are all physically and intellectually challenged. They completely depend on me and my staff for all daily living activities. They are all nonverbal. Our school is a Broward County public school for the severest handicapped students within the County that are still able to attend school. Our students population is a mix of those with Autism, intellectually and physically disabled and the medically fragile. Our students’ needs are very complex and varied. Bright Horizons School is a stimulating environment where students and therapists concentrate on promoting physical strength, independence, socialization, communication, behavior stability & sensory processing disorder mitigation, which are all crucial components for our students’ growth & success.

My Project

The materials requested will give all our students access to our school gardens. In order to include all students, it's crucial that all elements (including this picnic table) are wheelchair accessible. In the therapy/sensory garden, we are creating an outdoor classroom where academics, activities and horticulture, OT, PT therapies can take place. Research studies shows nature has a positive effect on cognitive functioning, improves attending and memory, concentration & higher rates of goal achievement. Studies also show that nature based activities have physical and social benefits: lower heart rate, improved immune systems, fine & gross motor skills, eye-hand coordination and over-all health. Nature based activities increase cooperative, social and group interactions. My students need a wheelchair accessible picnic table for an outside classroom area in a therapy garden at our special needs school.

Our mission is to create a handicap accessible garden that will provide a plethora of opportunities & services for students, families & the community.

The garden will provide a functional & beautiful space for students with severe disabilities to receive an array of needed services such as sensory processing disorder therapy, occupational & physical therapy, communication therapy & unique & meaningful learning experiences.
