This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In the 5th grade, we have started a club for students who love to read called Bookworms. Not only do we read, read, read all day in English class--now we are reading after school, at recess, and at home!
It takes a special group of students to give up recess to read, and I'm lucky enough to teach them.
My fifth graders unabashedly love curling up with a good book. I started Bookworms to fill a need for a safe, quiet space to read for my students and as a way to get them excited about reading. Now, students run up to me every day to ask if Bookworms is meeting that day, to point out how far they have read in their books, or to show off their custom-made bookmark to another student.
As a daughter of two librarians, I was lucky enough to always have a quiet and wonderful place to escape into books. But for many of my students, the library is simply too far away to reach most days--especially since we go to school from 7:20 until 4:15. These hard-working students and passionate students deserve a reading space, which is why I created Bookworms!
My Project
My Bookworms will absolutely love being able to read new and exciting books both during English class and while we meet as a club. They are busily reading through my current classroom library, and I know that these voracious readers will soon need new, high quality, challenging books. We would also love some comfy bean bag chairs to add to our rug area.
We never know exactly what it is that will impact a child's life.
I firmly believe that many of those influences can be fictional--from Roald Dahl to Harry Potter, my students are ready to be inspired by wonderful books.
