This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met "Divergent," "Percy Jackson," "Origami Yoda," and so many more!
My students are a mixture of 8th grade standard and advanced students.
Our schools is located in a historical, high need, tiny, and rural town. They are great kids, but they don't have a thirst for knowledge and reading. I think part of that issue is because they just don't know that reading can be FUN!
I have spent the last seven years watching my students struggle to find things to read or not even bother reading because their options are so sparse, or they don't even know there is such a thing as reading for fun. I would love to be able to provide a classroom library that my students can peruse and borrow from simply to read for FUN! After polling my students and exhaustive research I believe that I have put together an amazing collection of books (from adventure to horror to romance to Sci Fi) that can't help but entice my students to read. If I can get a good base started on a classroom library I can add new books to it every year. Therefore, your donation will help my current 95 students (and countless students in the years to come)learn that reading can be fun and interesting!
My school is located in a town that doesn't have access to a true blue bookstore.
In fact, if someone in our town wants to drive to a bookstore it would take them over a 40 minute drive to get to one. On top of that, our library is not stocked with quite enough books that entice and draw students in. Because of this my students have quite a hard time accessing exciting books that they would like to read for fun.
