Do you know what it is like when you eat too much? You feel stuffed. It is not a good feeling. However, stuffing our minds with books would be like eating at a banquet. Most of my children have only had a book as a appetizer. Reading is something that is not going on in our households today.
I teach kindergarten in a poor rural area.
Many of them have not been out of the town where they are living. They are being raised by a single parent or grandparent. They have grown up without being read to. Our school is Pre-K through 4th with an enrollment of about 1200. My children are eager to learn and want to better themselves. However, sometimes due to their experiences at home their self-esteem is low. It is with encouragement, motivation and love that I can build them up. I can make their beginning reading experience one in which they will want to keep getting up from the dinner table and get more food! They will want to stuff their minds with books.
Our school is changing reading programs this year. We are going from a direct instruction program to a program where we will be able to use our own creativity and skills. I am so excited about this. We will have a shared reading time. This is why I want a new rug for my classroom. I want an area where my whole group instruction is colorful and welcoming. We will also have guided group reading. The table I am asking for is the perfect thing I need this year so I can place it in my guided group reading area. This is where I will meet with groups of 5 to 6 and conduct lessons with leveled readers. I have a listening center already so the books I have requested will be added to that. It is with my shared reading that I will use the puppets to tell the story, and the children will retell the story. Puppets help a story come to life.
These donations will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.
My room will be more colorful and inviting with a brand new rug. They will be eager to come sit and listen to stories and songs. There are many mini lessons that can be taught with the things that are on that rug. The table will be perfect for the children to sit around for guided group reading. I will also be able to meet here with my word study groups.
