Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

" 'Tis the good reader that makes the good book." To me, Emerson's quote means that when my students become good readers, they will not only be able to find joy in all they read, but they will also be able to find joy in writing or creating their own books.
My students are vivacious 5 and 6 year old Kindergarteners.
They enjoy school and they love learning new things. They love to read and listen to stories. They are also English Learners. Their primary language is Spanish. They live in one of the most densely populated areas of our large urban city. Most parents are recent immigrants from Mexico and Central America. Our school's goal is to be a place where students learn not just to be better students, but to be better people and community members. Teachers and staff work together and don't see students as yours or mine, but as our students.
My Project
These bilingual books will be used as part of a project to increase children's access to books. Every week, my students take home a backpack with six books. Three books are in English and three are in Spanish. They read these books at home with their parents. Many parents are unable to read in English, that is why half of the books are in Spanish. A few of my parents are also unable to read in any language. This is why I model for parents how to use the books during Back to School Night. I show parents how to "read" books with their children even if the books are in a language they cannot read.
Many of the books in our reading backpacks are over ten years old. They have been through many hands and have been enjoyed by hundreds of children and their families. It is time to replace many of these books. I would love for my students to have good quality new books for our reading backpacks. We all know reading is key in their academic success.
This project will make a difference because children who live in poverty do not have the same access to books as more affluent peers.
This project will bring good quality books into their homes and will empower parents to be more active in their child's education. Research has shown that access to books can nearly eliminate the achievement gap between children in poverty and their more affluent peers. This project will lay the foundation for my students' love of reading and academic success.
