This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine going to class in a room in which few windows open. In my school, bolting windows shut when they break is a common occurrence. We have no air conditioning or ventilation system for hot, muggy Maryland days. We desperately need quality fans.
It's difficult to learn when it is beyond uncomfortably warm.
This past year, my classroom routinely hit 95-100 degrees in the spring and early fall... even when the temperature outside was in the 80s.
My students work hard, but it's difficult to keep them interested, motivated, or invested in a classroom that shares many characteristics with a sauna.
My Project
While I wish I could provide air conditioning for my students, building codes prevent this possibility. So, we move to the next best thing-- fans that can move the air in the classroom and provide a relief, if just for a few seconds at a time, for students who are sweating and uncomfortable. Fans will make it easier for students to concentrate and return to the business of learning.
Your kind donation will make the learning environment in my classroom bearable for students beleaguered by an ancient building that traps and retains heat.
When students feel comfortable, they are able to learn.
