We don't stop at learning to draw, we learn how to communicate with one another and express ourselves. We turn hard emotion into tangible artworks. I want my students to be creative problem solvers. I need to do BIG things to engage them. 'Creativity is intelligence having fun.' -Albert Einstein
My students are from 5 distinctly different communities.
We all come together and kids who would otherwise not interact have the chance to become best friends. These kids are spirited and polite. In my opinion they are the cream of crop, the best of the best.
My school is amazing; it literally runs itself. We have little money and at the current time we share a principal with our high school. Still, we achieve amazing things. Our students excel in everything they do, from sports to art to making an impression on outsiders. The artist residency program we were blessed with last year produced an amazing mural and got our kids the good press they deserve.
Everyone in our middle school gets along. The faculty and staff work together constantly to get things done the right way. Our students reflect our cooperative characters. I am proud and humbled to be their teacher and help them build their self esteem and ultimately reach their dreams.
My Project
The goal of the 2014-15 Artist Residency Project is for art students to design and create a collaborative mosaic mural that will convey student-generated ideas about the history of the the area and their thoughts and feelings about the school.
An Artist Residency Project is designed to have lasting benefits for all of the participants: students are fully immersed in an art form and see how it connects to life and learning, teachers are exposed to alternative ways of experiencing and sharing the creative process and what it brings to their classrooms, and administrators realize the ways in which the arts fully engage students and impact their learning across the curriculum. The arts are proven to stimulate and enhance student performance in all curriculum areas and to encourage the development of improved self-image and empowerment.
These donations will enable us to pay the Teaching Artist cost.
The arts provide opportunities for:
* Imagination and creativity to flow
* Communication and problem-solving skills to grow
* Self-directed intrinsic motivation to be engendered
* Teamwork to be encouraged and appreciated
* Diverse thinking to take place
* Individuality to excel
* Positive self-expression to evolve
