My Students

My AP biology students strive to do well in class to get ready to take the AP exam. They work hard to tackle the challenging material. They are most engaged when they are reading about current events happening in the scientific community because it makes what they read in the textbook come alive.

My students are 11th grade AP biology students who want to be ready for college.

The main mission of our school is getting students from our inner city neighborhood ready to continue their education. Most of our students will be the first in their family to go to college, sometimes even the first to graduate high school. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many families have difficulty buying school supplies for their children.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are biology lab supplies and general classroom supplies. Many of my students find it difficult to spend money on school supplies. It is for that reason I wish to supply them with everything they might need to actively participate in class. In addition many of them cannot afford luxuries like crayons and glue, so I am purchasing a class set so they can participate in some of the more interactive labs we have planned. Labs are a crucial part of the AP exam. Students are expected to know how to analyze data and carry out certain experiments. These lab supplies are often costly, and contain perishables that must be replaced every year. The lab kits I have selected are labs that I thought would be fun and interactive, and help illuminate concepts we learn about in class.

Students learn best when they can engage with the material.

It helps them visualize concepts and remember important information. In addition, the Next Generation Science Standards put a great emphasis on investigating and analyzing data. Labs are a crucial part of biology that I do not want my students to miss out on.
