We have a strong connection to nature within our biology department. We would love the opportunity to bring living organisms into our classroom. We work closely with conservation groups such as Lakeside Nature Center, and Stream Team " 75 in Missouri. We have been members of each group for years.
We have students from all walks of life.
This includes many separate ethnicity's, religious groups, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds which can inhibit opportunity, life choices, and overall quality of life. Science and math are often difficult for our students. Many students come in with little to no background in the areas of biology and chemistry. However, our state requires End-of-Course testing in the area of biology. We are under pressure to ensure that we offer success to all students. During the last three years, we have met all 16 points in the area of biology. This did not happen by accident. We use many techniques that allow our students to achieve mastery over subject matter, regardless of any deficits that they may have. We encourage teamwork. We work in collaborative groups to make sure that all students achieve and succeed. We are very interested in bringing live plants and animals into our classroom.
We would allow students to help us set up two aquariums and a terrarium. We would have one fish tank with colorful, freshwater fish. The other aquarium would contain native, Missouri animals. We have had a lot of experience taking care of classroom aquariums, in conjunction with Lakeside Nature Center and the Missouri Stream Team. Aquatic studies are of high interest to our students. Students can help determine which organisms, including plants and animals would be able to live together in harmony. We would make sure to have larger aquariums to make sure that we have ample room, oxygen, and water for all of the creatures. Our rooms have windows, which will help keep plants alive. If we were able to get live plants and animals, we would be the showcase of our district. We have a strong desire to bring these type of experiences to our children. We want our students to have the experiences that will make them appreciate nature. We would love to beautify our classroom new life.
Our project will make a difference in the lives of all of our students.
Students can learn how to take care of diverse fresh and native fish, as well as plant life. We can take concepts such as pH, and make them become real. We can observe animals in a beautiful aquarium. We can write reports about the organisms that we see. We can showcase our aquariums to visitors to our school. We could even bring in elementary students into see our pretty aquariums. These aquariums would be educational.
