This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love, love, LOVE science! There is never a shortage of things to look at and discover. However, some things you can't see with the naked eye. Plant cells, hair, a drop of blood, foods, etc. require the use of a microscope in order to see the inner workings.

My students are Special Education students.

I have 15 kids. 6 of them are autistic. The others have varying degrees of learning disabilities. They are very visual and tactile learners who need hands-on activities to keep them engaged and interested. My students would greatly enjoy the use of a professional microscope in order to see the inner workings of blood and plant cells as well as rocks and minerals. Our school is a low-income school with approximately 28% of our students being second-language learners. Funds for these types of expenses simply don't exist in our current budget.

My Project

Recently, my students have been studying plant cells, germs, bacteria, rocks and minerals as well as the human body. Students see pictures of slides showing the small microscopic cells but it would be wonderful if they could see them up close and personal for themselves. We need a microscope and slides. I think that these types of hands-on activities inspire the love of science in students. Who knows? Maybe one of them will be a scientist or a doctor some day through these experiences.

Currently, my classroom has no way of showing students what plant cells or skin and blood cells really look like.

Pictures simply aren't enough to demonstrate with. This donation would bring real-life examples to the attention of my students.
