My Students

We may not leave our wonderful classroom, but we travel extensively throughout the USA and the world beyond. We are limited to some small maps and pictures in our atlases that we have to hunt up. It would be magical if we could just pull down a huge map that shows countries, mountains, and rivers!

I have the privilege of working with such interesting and creative students.

Every day is fun! We are part of a large, urban, public school system that is very economically challenged. Our Montessori Magnet allows children to learn in a variety of ways. These children come to school each day ready to tackle new challenges. They take a great deal of responsibility for their own learning and show compassion and kindness to one another. Our classroom is learning centered with many hands-on activities that students tackle at their own rate.

My Project

We need a pull down roller map of the World and the United States. Understanding world cultures through social studies and geography is a large part of our curriculum. Many years ago, we used to have pull down maps in our classroom so that we could view the world and the USA instantly. It was large enough that we could see relationships between countries as we discussed current events or global issues. We have moved to a different place and no longer have access to those materials. Now, we crowd around a small map, leaving most of the students out of the picture. Each year, in our school, classrooms study different countries and create wonderful displays. Then, we "tour" the school with our passports ready to learn about people far away. It would be nice to actually see where these countries are in relation to one another.

Enable us to grasp the global community in which we live!
