This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It's said that children are made readers on the laps of their parents, but it doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes it happens in the seats of the school desks. My students are energetic readers who love the thrill of a new book!
I teach reading three times a day at a Title I school, located in a high poverty area.
The school services two section 8 public housing communities, with more than 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. Some of our students' only books are their library books and classroom books.
My Project
We already have paperback sets of all of these chapter books in our classroom. Sometimes there's nothing like being read to. It's not only for little kids. Being read aloud to creates a connection between the author and the reader, expands vocabulary, and demonstrates prosody and proper fluency. In the age of the "distracted generation", reading aloud continues to be one of the most calming, and anticipated parts of the day. Educator Jim Trelease says that reading aloud is the "magic bullet for creating a lifelong reader."
I only teach reading, so more than 60 students will benefit from these audio books.
This is an amazing resource for students who aren't quite reading on grade level. It will give everyone a chance to focus on comprehension, and the love of literature. After listening to these audio books, students will be able to take the A.R. tests (which is pushed heavily). These audio books will be used for years to come. Like the old adage says, it takes a village. Be apart of our village and give today.
