My Students

"A dot is a line that went for a walk" -Paul Klee. This quote is the basis for what I would like to teach my middle school students this year. I would like for them, through daily sketch book challenges, to experience line, colors, texture, and visual awareness by self exploration in drawing.

My middle school students are from many areas in inner city DC.

At this age level, these students need to begin cultivating a self confidence in their personal lives and in a skill they can be proud of. I think observational sketch book drawing is a great way for my students to become disciplined, inspired, and confidant in sharing their ideas. My students' strengths are visually representing their ideas and I think having the daily practice of drawing will only improve their positivity and personal self-confidence to dream and dream big!

My Project

My goal for my students is to begin the year with these sketchbooks and pencils as a personal daily practice time. The time set aside will be the first 10 minutes of the class period. I will play music and have a sketch book visual/prompt/challenge displayed for the students. This will allow for the students to transition calmly to an art atmosphere where they can express themselves freely through sketching. Weekly, I would like to have a reflection time when students can share with each other their favorite sketch of the week, their most challenging, or most inspiring. It will create an atmosphere of mutual respect for others as they share their thoughts as well as a source of ideas and inspirations among students. As the year progresses, I hope that my students can visually observe their growth as artists and thinkers in the pages of their sketch books.

Working in an inner city school, I see a lot of students who need to build their self- confidence in a positive way.

Often the outlets for students to achieve are limited to academics and athletics. With your donations, I can give my students another chance to achieve through the experience of art!
