Many of my preschool autistic students are non-verbal, struggle with communication and depend on pictures in order to communicate with others. They use pictures daily to help them communicate and be independent.
My class is an Autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5.
Many of them are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills. They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting. Most of the activities during our day are hands-on activities which include many file folder games and visuals.
My Project
In the classroom the color printer with ink would be used to make and print pictures in order to help the students communicate with others. Pictures help the students to request items, activities and actions (help, open). Pictures are also used during circle time to tell stories and bring songs to life. Lastly, pictures are used to help students be independent by making choices, following a schedule and participating in activities all by making it possible for them to have a voice.
These donations will help to give the students a voice when they have none.
They will learn to communicate by handing or pointing to pictures so peers and adults can understand what they are saying. The students' lives will be changed because they will be understood when words fail them.
