My Students

My students come from diverse, mostly low-income backgrounds. Seventy percent of my students are from military families and live in base housing located near our school. We have a high number of special education students and a percentage of our students are bused in from the inner city. Our school district lacks funding for PE and my students could really benefit from more quality equipment than what we currently have.

The majority of my students have not experienced PE as it should be presented.

A lot of them lack basic motor skills and knowledge to participate in sports. For this reason, I am concentrating on ​team and sportsmanship while I teach basic skills. I am also working with my students on social skills that will enhance all areas of their lives.

My Project

Our school lacks a gymnasium or other indoor space for PE. Days are hot and getting hotter in inland San Diego, making for potentially dangerous conditions for our PE students. Having this shade canopy as a permanent fixture will go a long way in keeping our kids cool during PE.

Providing shade is imperative to keeping our students safe from the heat in PE.

With a shady place to take a break, our kids will be able to thrive and enjoy all we have to offer in our PE program!
