Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere. My 5th grade class is in a high-need, low-income public school, nestled in the heart of Southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.
Each child in my classroom is a unique learner who comes to school each day ready to achieve at the highest levels.
As a teacher, it is my job to make sure the students have access to the materials they need at all times as well as use those materials in a way that will facilitate higher learning and achievement.
My Project
My students are enamored by books and storytelling. They spend much of their free time reading and exploring the stories around them. With all that reading, however, many of the books they are exposed to feature male main characters or duos, leaving the girls to be underrepresented in the literature.
Females represent 50% of my classroom, yet comprise only a fraction of the lead characters in our literature—a fact I would like to change with this project.
With the literature I have requested, the students will be exposed to strong female characters who make a difference not only to the story but to the world around them. My students will see that it isn't just the boys who make a difference in the world, but that girls can have an equal or greater impact on things as well.
And from that literature, the students will create their own stories with strong female leads. They will bring the tales they create to life using stop motion animation (hence the need for the Chromebook requested.) The students will be able to use the literature as a springboard for their own storytelling quest, and create a love of telling stories throughout this year and, hopefully, the rest of their lives.
