Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our class is made up of 28 third grade scholars who come from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. They are creative, intelligent, kind, and compassionate. They enjoy exploring our world, working collaboratively, and encourage each other by cheering on each other's successes and coaching each other through frustration. They are my inspiration every day!

These students are our future, and my hope is to provide them with learning experiences to help support their development into the creative, empathetic, and collaborative leaders of tomorrow.

My Project

I was inspired by "The Humans of New York" and "Souls of San Francisco" to foster compassion and empathy by giving my students the opportunity to recognize themselves through connecting with others using photography and digital storytelling. My students will be able to take pictures of classmates, family, friends, and others in the community. The camera case and protective ring will allow students to check out and bring our classroom camera home. Students will be able to interview the people they photograph using the voice recorder and asking leading questions and then really listening to the answers to form deeper questions. They may ask questions such as, "What is your greatest struggle right now? What is a moment you felt most afraid? What is your happiest moment? What is your most challenging memory and what did it teach you? What is your favorite thing about yourself?" Or, they may ask for a piece of advice and how the interviewee came to learn the importance of it. The answers to questions such as these, will lead to stories in which classmates and others can connect through our classroom blog and realize they are not alone. In our own classroom, students have stories to tell of immigration, homelessness, incarceration of family members, personal disabilities, and cultural and racial discrimination. This project will allow their voices to be heard and their stories to be told.

As much as it has been said that out of the mouths of babes comes wisdom and understanding, I want to see what can be seen through the eyes of children as they inspire each other and those they photograph to make connections with themselves, with each other, and with other people.
