Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking, bright, young individuals. They attend school each and every day, ready to learn, and meet all high expectations. My students love challenges and face difficulties each and every day with smiles on their faces. My students come from a Title I school with a high population of English learners. Most come from a low-income household and have limited resources and experiences. To many of my students, their only chance of life-enriching activities are at school. They love school and I want to make this place the most enriching place for them!
My Project
Students think writing, and they think pages and pages of paragraphs. They don't realize, sometimes storytelling may not be long at all. Poetry is a beautiful way to tell stories, it can be funny, descriptive, and full of figurative language devices! I want poetry story telling to be not so intimidating for my students. That's why I want to incorporate Makey Makey Kits into our classroom writing routine. Makey Makey kits make everyday objects into keyboards. Have a banana laying around? Students can connect alligator clips from the Makey Makey board to the banana, and it becomes a key they can type with!
My students will have so much fun imagining, inventing and creating, they won't even realize they're writing!
During April's Poetry month, students can all become Coding Poets and write poems and code them to a sound or a visual representation that will tell a digital story! They can write something simple then add fun figurative language devices that they can code, like an onomatopoeia or a hyperbole. My authors will draw 3-4 visual representation on their paper that can be connected with alligator clips and the Makey Makey kits. Next students then can record their voices or sound effects using their Chromebooks to create a literal representations of their stories full of figurative language! When the student or an audience member touches the representation on paper, that will trigger their codes on their Chromebooks, and the poems and stories will become a interactive digital masterpiece!
I want to provide a class that can foster students' curiosities and create vibrant learners in all subjects. The incorporation of STEAM with writing will truly motivate students to become more engaged and invested
