Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Without a doubt, teaching is what I was meant to do. Every single day I feel lucky to hang out with and learn from my students. They are an extension of my family. My students are hard-working, passionate and curious. They inspire me every single day.
In the heart of Silicon Valley, it is important to me to incorporate technology not only as a tool to create, but also as a tool to discover, inspire, and soar!.
My students love to tell stories; they love to share their experiences with each other and get creative in the many different ways they can tell stories. Digital storytelling is a hands-ons way to tell stories using technology as the vehicle.
My Project
For this project I hope to give my students the opportunity to engage with technology in a different way. Often times, technology is used in the classroom to create PowerPoints or type papers. Although this is practical use, I want something more for my students.
Students can use digital storytelling as a tool to start conversations, raise awareness, drive change, find answers to their questions, and make a difference.
My students wanted to share stories that interest them; they want to teach others what they are passionate about, and want to drive change through civic action. For our project, my students will research, interview, and record stories "of the human heart" similar to NPR's StoryCorp series.
This project will give my students the opportunity to write about something that they are passionate about, something that matters to them, something personal. It gives them an opportunity to have their voices heard from a perspective that is often overlooked: a young person. Eventually, we hope to submit our stories to NPR and also make them available on our class website and blog.
For my project, we would first use the mobile table bases to change our desks to become mobile. This would give us the flexibility to create spaces for students to be able to record, rehearse, use the technology in the flexible way. The camcorder and green screen will give kids the opportunity to "travel" for their interviews without ever having to leave the classroom. It is an exciting chance for me to step aside and let them drive and lead this project; a chance for me to learn from some of the kindest, bravest, smartest humans I know.
