Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects & activities that include history, science, literacy and art! Grant writing helps students be clear in the descriptions of what they want, how they will be leaders & why the class needs this couch.
Each week our high school students read to little book buddies at our neighborhood elementary school. With these new books they will read & talk about the stories, the feelings & ideas in each book. Then they work with little buddies on developing personal storytelling projects. After they read, discuss & write together, students will create original short digital stories! When they use the time lapse camera, students will create storytelling videos.
In Their Own Words
We want to get books to read to the little kids. - Jason
We will help them tell their stories and we will film their stories.
We want to help our book buddies become better readers & learn more about being kind & about a lot of different cultures in the books.
We will be leaders by helping the little kids to read & helping them write stories and then helping them as they tell their stories in front of the camera. - Jason
We will keep track of the books & make sure all the little buddies get a chance ot pick out a favorite story.
Because we want to be able to teach our little buddies that their stories are important. We will use the camera to tape the stories our little buddies tell us. - Jason
When we listen to the book buddies as they read and later when they tell their own stories we will be helping them learn & feel good about themselves. We will help them realize they are important.
