Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my third grade students are English Language Learners who enter my class below grade level in reading, writing, and mathematics, yet this doesn't prevent them from walking through my classroom door energetic, eager, and excited to learn!
Two things I know about my students: they love when learning occurs in a hands-on, engaging way, and love when learning enables them to help others in need!
With today's availability of technology, ideas, and information, there is a greater emphasis on new thinking and new innovation within the classroom. However, teachers are also aware that truly preparing our students for the 21st century means focusing on the well-being of the entire child through the 6 C's of education: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, citizenship, and character education.
My Project
My project embeds character education with STEAM by integrating communication, creativity, hands-on learning, compassion, and connectedness, with digital storytelling that can be shared with others locally and globally.
My third grade students have been given the opportunity to engage in 3D printed STEAM projects that help others in need, and they want to tell the world about it!
We currently have one 3D printer in the classroom but need an additional printer to meet the demands of our projects. The requested 3D printer and filament will be used to complete two projects for children in need: 3D printed prosthetic hands and 3D printed eyeglasses.
The microphone, headphone, and iPad will be used to communicate the process of designing, engineering, and testing these 3D printed creations through digital storytelling, and will be posted on a collaborative website known as Flipgrid. Flipgrid makes it possible to connect locally and globally, allowing individuals to access our stories and respond from anywhere in the world!
By sharing our stories, we hope to collaborate and get ideas from other classes; we aspire to connect with the child/children we are designing for, and have faith our story will encourage others to STEAM for a need!
