Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing scholars that are eager to learn and take on new challenges! They come from varied backgrounds, from their culture and ethnicity, yet they all share the same love for learning and becoming better versions of themselves.
We are a Title I School, which means we have high financial needs and limited resources.
Even with this challenge, my students are eager to take on every opportunity. Thanks to sites like DonorsChoose, and those who support us, we are able to provide these necessary opportunities to our amazing students!
My Project
We will be starting our unit on narrative writing, where students will learn the story arc and create their own dynamic stories. In the past, we have had students take turns coming up to the front of the room to share their handwritten stories. This year more than ever, I have students that are most excited about technology and specifically coding. Using an Apple laptop, students can access a coding program called Scratch, in combination with these Makey Makey boards, students have adapted our curriculum to bring technology and storytelling together.
This project will address their learning needs in ELA and will help them stay motivated to keep writing, believe in themselves as authors and coders, and reach their personal goals in an active learning environment.
The Makey Makey boards allow students to code a program that connects to an external board (the Makey Makey board) that allows the students to turn anything into a controller. Students will code their personal narrative stories into creative and interactive experiences such as posterboards or story mapping projects that can be personalized to their story and their code. The Makey Makey boards connect to an Apple laptop that has the coding program Scratch, and turns any object into an interactive display and using Scratch the students will record their writing pieces to the program and present each part of the story arc for our peer-critique process. Rather than everyone standing, one at a time in the front of the room, they will instead create individualized, coded stories that can be enjoyed for years to come. I am piloting this process in my 6th-grade classes with the hope of duplicating this process for all teachers next year.
