My students need a green screen, puppets, iPod Touches, and a t-shirt press so they can tell stories of charities through their public service announcements and marketing campaigns.
Our diverse middle school community is made up of 1,400 students who are goal-oriented, hardworking, and dedicated children. They come to school each day, knowing that they are welcomed by nurturing and knowledgeable teachers. With the generous support of DonorsChoose.org donors, our library makerspace encourages students to learn and create. Through design thinking challenges, our students learn that great design begins with considering the needs of others. Our Kids Kindness Kart program offers students activities that they can participate in to make a difference. Our students have written letters for the Macy's Make a Wish letter writing campaign, drawn "Welcome Home" signs for Habitat for Humanity, and designed one-of-a-kind pillowcases for children whose lives have been affected by AIDS. They have also painted inspirational works of art for the families temporarily residing at our local Ronald McDonald House.
Our students have learned that when they use their hands, hearts, and minds to creative something for another person they can truly make a difference.
My Project
What would you do with $500? Maybe you would go shopping, enjoy a vacation, or even pay some bills. But that's not what 5 groups of students did when they won the 1st Annual Long Island Kids "Make a Difference" Charity Pitch Fest last year. You see, when they won their charities won.
Barbara Mikulski once said "Each one of us can make a difference, and together we make change."
Only in its first year, the Charity Pitch Fest received an overwhelming response. 76 teams of students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade, researched about various charities and recorded public service announcements using the Flipgrid app and web tool. All of the submissions were created by students who were actively engaged and motivated to do their best to make a difference. After the videos were shared through social media, the top 5 teams receiving the most votes were invited to pitch for their favorite charities at the annual SLIME - Students of Long Island Maker Expo. This highlight of the event demonstrated how students can use digital storytelling to help others. The charities who benefitted from these students' efforts were Kids for Causes, the Georgie Badiel Foundation, Pennies for Patients, the Cares Foundation, and St. Michael and All Angels Ministry.
My students would like to compete again in this event, and they need your help. Some students would like to add green screen technology to their submissions this year with the Do Ink app available on iPod Touches. Other students want to create videos that are geared for younger audiences, so they need a variety of colorful puppets with friendly faces. To introduce their video submissions, my students would like to design their own t-shirts to advertise their charities. Therefore, they need a hot press to apply these transfers. Thanks!
